Android Auto provides a driver-optimized app experience for users with an Android phone and the Android Auto app, but who do not have a vehicle that uses Android Automotive OS.
If a user's car or aftermarket stereo system supports Android Auto, they can use your app directly on their car's display by connecting their phone. You enable Android Auto to connect with your phone app by creating services that Android Auto uses to display a driver-optimized interface to the driver. You reuse these services for your Android Automotive OS app, but users do not install your phone app on their cars. Android Auto already has millions of users and hundreds of compatible cars and aftermarket stereo systems.

The car's system is a stand-alone Android device that is optimized for driving. Instead of using your phone app, users install your app directly onto the head unit. You can use the same media browser service with both Android Automotive OS and Android Auto, however there are some activities such as sign-in and settings that you must design specifically for Android Automotive OS.

Something that informs users that its sole purpose is to make sure the decoders work. Maybe call it "Headunit Decoder Requirement Check. I've been trying to download this head unit app for the past week was trying the old one and now this new one and every time I click the pay now button for PayPal it just hangs there saying "Contacting PayPal".

Your app can be accessed on a car's console as well as a user's phone screen, so you need to test your app on both. This topic shows you how to test your app for each type of display that drivers can use to access your app. In addition, this topic provides instructions for testing other required functionality. This section teaches you how to install and run the DHU on your development machine to test your apps. The installation procedure varies depending on your Linux distribution.

You only need to enable developer mode the first time you run the Android Auto app. If the head unit server is not already running, tap the three dots in the top right of the screen to open the overflow menu and select Start head unit server. On the development machine, run the following adb command to forward socket connections from the development machine's port to the same port number on the Android device.

DHU commands allow you to test your app with Android Auto features, such as playing voice input or switching between night and day display mode. You can also issue commands by selecting the DHU window and using keyboard shortcuts.
